The Unique Advantages of Wintertime Plastic Surgery

But in addition to the more traditional things that you may associate with this time of year, I have always believed that the holiday season is a uniquely great opportunity for patients to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure. While there may not be such a thing as a bad time to improve your appearance and self-confidence, I’m happy to explain the advantages of undergoing cosmetic surgery this winter.

While there may be no offseason when it comes to wanting to look and feel your best, many patients I speak to about improving their appearance seem to have spring and summer in mind. Undergoing cosmetic surgery in December or January can give your body the time it needs to fully recover and present the final results of your procedure well in time for next beach and pool season. Additionally, the cold winter months can allow patients to recover more comfortably and conceal temporary scarring and compression garments underneath looser, more comfortable seasonal clothing.

Another factor that makes the winter such a great time for many people to undergo their cosmetic procedure is the additional time away from school and work associated with the winter holidays. Even the most minor cosmetic surgeries require some time for healing and relaxation following surgery. This timing around Christmas and New Years can be ideal for many patients.

As for which procedures are most commonly performed this time of year, that depends on the desires of each individual patient. With all the big meals and additional stress eating that the holiday season can contribute to, I do typically perform many liposuctions and tummy tucks this time of year. Non-surgical maintenance treatments like Botox or facial filler injections are also common for people who want to look their best for holiday parties, photos, and other winter gatherings.

Protect Skin to Avoid Premature Wrinkles

Although wrinkles and lax skin are inevitable with age, there are some preventative measures patients can take to avoid early signs of aging. Dr. Elliott always recommends that patients wear sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF year round to avoid sun damage that can cause skin to appear thick and wrinkled.  Avoiding environmental factors such as smoking which breaks down collagen can also reduce premature wrinkles.  Despite a proper skincare regime, as we age our skin cells divide more slowly causing the skin to thin and lose elasticity.

For patients with early signs of wrinkles and lax skin, laser skin resurfacing may be a beneficial option to restore new, healthy skin. For patients with specific concerns of sagging skin or wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, or neck, plastic surgery may be a suitable option.

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can improve the appearance of the eyes, including the upper and/or lower eyelids or both. A forehead or brow lift eliminates frown lines and deep creases across the forehead, a neck lift can remove excess fat and skin contributing to a turkey waddle appearance.

What can I Expect During Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery?

Laser skin resurfacing after plastic surgery can also minimize the appearance of scarring from incisions and enhance surgical results. Individuals who are not quite ready for traditional cosmetic surgery may also benefit from laser skin resurfacing which can be customized for a wide range of ages and skin types to meet each individual’s unique skin needs.

Although, the downtime for laser skin resurfacing is reduced compared to traditional surgical procedures, patients will still need to allot time for recovery.   The first day after laser skin resurfacing the skin will be very tender and appear sunburnt. Generally, it will take at least a week for full recovery. You may experience hardening or crusting of skin a couple days after resurfacing and it’s imperative to avoid scratching to avoid scarring. After several days the skin will become dry and peel to reveal the new more vibrant skin.

For optimal recovery it’s necessary to follow the recommended protective skin care regime and continue to use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day after healing to protect your new, rejuvenated skin.
