Considering a Rhinoplasty? This Checklist Can Help

smiling-female-facePlastic surgery is always a process. This goes for any cosmetic or reconstructive procedure, even those that seem like just minor tweaks. In the case of rhinoplasty surgery to help alter and enhance the contour of a person’s nose, preparation is everything. And in my personal experience, a pre-surgery checklist like the one I’ve prepared below can be extremely useful for any patient trying to prepare for rhinoplasty surgery.

1.) Fully Understand The Benefits of Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty is a versatile procedure that can do far more than just make a person’s nose smaller, which is a common misconception. When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like myself, rhinoplasty can alter the size and shape of the nose to create a more balanced facial appearance. It can also be used to address certain breathing issues including a deviated septum and structural breathing obstructions.

2.) Determine Your Aesthetic Goals

What specifically do you want to achieve with rhinoplasty surgery? Are you interested in altering the size or shape of the nose (or both)? Are you hoping to help your nose fit in more symmetrically with your other facial features? And will your goals require additional facial procedures like chin surgery or eyelid surgery in order to fully achieve your aesthetic goals? These are all very important questions to consider and have answered.

3.) Confirm if You Are a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty

To begin with, any person considering a rhinoplasty procedure should be in good enough health to safely undergo the surgery. Once this has been confirmed, I always discuss all the options that my patients have to alter the contour of their nose, including the possibility of non-surgical rhinoplasty using facial filler injections.

4.) Choose The Right Plastic Surgeon With Rhinoplasty Experience

Any plastic surgeon you consider to perform your rhinoplasty procedure should be board-certified and have years of experience performing rhinoplasty. But this is just the start. You’ll want to find a doctor that you are comfortable with and makes you feel confident and emboldened throughout the entire process. It’s also essential to see before and after photos from previous rhinoplasty surgeries to confirm that they are a good aesthetic match with your preferences.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty: What You Need to Know

nose surgery atlanta gaNo matter what kind of procedure they are interested in undergoing, post-surgery recovery is always a concern among my cosmetic surgery patients. The plastic surgery recovery period is a critical time for both allowing the body to fully heal and promoting the best and longest-lasting result from the procedure performed. I’ve always found that providing clear and accurate information about these things can be incredibly reassuring and helpful to patients. This is why I wanted to discuss what my patients can expect from their recovery after rhinoplasty surgery.

I wanted to begin by laying out the standard recovery timetable for rhinoplasty surgery. Every patient is different and this can vary, but these thresholds should provide a simple baseline of expectations for most patients. Rhinoplasty is almost always performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning no overnight hospital stay will be required. Patients can typically return to most of their normal daily activities within two to three weeks after their surgery. More physically demanding tasks like exercise, heavy lifting, and certain kinds of strenuous work will have to wait at least a month. This will be discussed in more detail at the time of consultation and pre-op.

In the weeks following the procedure, there will be some natural swelling of the face. As swelling subsides and tissue heals, a gradual change in appearance will become noticeable. In some cases, the nose will be bandaged and splinted for a week after rhinoplasty to provide protection and support to the newly re-contoured nose. Depending on the type of rhinoplasty and the extent of the surgery, it can take several months for swelling to fully dissipate, but outstanding aesthetic results from rhinoplasty will appear much sooner than that.

To help my patients get the most out of their rhinoplasty recovery period, I recommend taking the following precautions:

  • Take baths (instead of showers) until surgical bandages have been removed
  • Avoid blowing your nose when possible
  • Use a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen on your nose, and avoid too much sun exposure, in the weeks following rhinoplasty
  • Try to limit more extreme facial contortions like smiling or laughing when possible
  • Be gentle while brushing your teeth to limit movement of your upper lip and irritation of the nose
  • Wear button-down shirts or be careful when pulling clothing like shirts over your head

I always tell my patients that recovery after rhinoplasty surgery is almost always less daunting than patients may believe before their procedure. Debunking Common Myths About Rhinoplasty Surgery

nose jobHere in my office, it’s always heartening to speak to patients who are excited and passionate about the possibilities that undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure like rhinoplasty can deliver. It can sometimes be difficult to know what is fact and what is fiction, so I love it when my patients are proactive and come to their consultation appointments prepared with knowledge about their respective procedures. This is why I wanted to debunk a few common myths about rhinoplasty surgery.

Myth #1: Rhinoplasty is Typically Only Performed On Women

This is false. In fact, rhinoplasty is one of the cosmetic surgery procedures that is most common for male patients. Men too can be self-conscious about the appearance of their nose, which is why so many of them turn to rhinoplasty each year. Additionally, rhinoplasty can also help men who experience breathing issues like a deviated septum or be performed as a reconstructive procedure for men who have previously broken their noses.

Myth #2: Patients Can Choose Any Nose Shape They Want

This isn’t quite true. While each rhinoplasty procedure is performed based on the unique preferences and needs of each individual patient, the goal of a rhinoplasty procedure is to provide symmetry and harmony to the patient’s existing facial anatomy. Some nose shapes and sizes may not be recommended for every patient, but we will discuss this at length during a rhinoplasty consultation appointment.

Myth #3: Rhinoplasty Can Be Dangerous to Undergo

When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with considerable experience performing the procedure, a rhinoplasty is considered very safe. Like any other cosmetic surgery, there are some potential risks associated with rhinoplasty, but the chances of developing any issues are quite small. Especially for patients who closely follow their plastic surgeon’s pre and post-surgery instructions and attend all follow-up appointments.

Rhinoplasty surgery can be an excellent way to help people improve their self-esteem and achieve a more symmetrical facial appearance.
