Board certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott frequently discusses breast reconstruction in his blogs as it’s one of his passions.   Many women who have had breast cancer removal surgery may opt for breast reconstruction to restore their breast(s) to more natural proportions after a mastectomy (breast removal) or lumpectomy.

One option for breast reconstruction surgery is “direct to implant” post mastectomy which is a single-step technique that allows for a breast implant to be inserted immediately following breast cancer removal.  Also known as oncoplastic surgery, Dr. Elliott is excited about performing direct to implant breast reconstruction because it allows patients to avoid tissue expanders.  However, this is assuming that the patient’s skin will immediately accept the implant. It is important to note that for patients who do not have enough healthy breast tissue, it may be necessary to use an expander first to make room for an implant.

When performing breast reconstruction surgery with implants, Dr. Elliott often recommends smooth implants with a high profilefor patients who’ve lost their breast(s) and have no remaining natural breast tissue.  This type of implant tends to yield more natural post-mastectomy reconstructive results.
