Signs of aging such as wrinkles and droopy skin are common complaints among board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott’s patients before surgery. Although not as common as facelift or tummy tuck surgery, arm lift surgery can address signs of aging and/or excess skin after dramatic weight loss. Technically known as brachioplasty, arm lift surgery eliminates fat and excess skin under the arm and between the arm pit and elbow to re-contour the arm for a smoother, more toned appearance.  Patients with upper arm fat and no excess skin are usually best treated with liposuction alone.

There are 2 different procedures for reducing the skin depending on how much excess skin there is, how tight of a result a patient desires and how long of a scar a patient can tolerate. The lesser procedure is limited to a scar in the armpit. This will tighten the skin somewhat but not as much as the procedure that involves an incision on the inner surface of the arm from the armpit to the elbow. Thus each patient will be advised how much improvement they can get with each operation and where the scar will be located.

It’s important for patients to maintain an active lifestyle to strengthen arms and maintain good overallhealth. However, exercise alone cannot address sagging skin that has lost elasticity. Patients who have noticeable sagging arm skin and are in overall good health may be a good candidate for arm lift surgery.  Results are long lasting, but dramatic weight fluctuation can affect results.
