Plastic Surgery for Men: Removal of Excess Fat around the Waist

As a society, we tend to associate plastic surgery more closely with women. There is a stereotype that women are more concerned with their appearance than men are, especially when it comes to having a slim figure and minimizing signs of aging. But after more than thirty years as a board-certified plastic surgeon, I’ve seen first-hand that self-consciousness is not gender-specific. This is why my most recent YouTube discussion videos have focused on explaining the benefits that plastic surgery procedures can hold for men.

The video below explores one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for men: liposuction of the midsection. This procedure has proven to be especially helpful for men for multiple reasons. First, while women often see that their fat is distributed between their abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks, men typically carry the majority of fat in their abdomen, including the sides of the waist, often referred to as “love handles.” Because liposuction targets a specific area of localized fat, men who are already trim throughout the rest of their body tend to be very happy with their results because the liposuction has addressed the only area of their body that bothers them. The second reason men see an especially large benefit from liposuction is because when the fat is removed, their skin is typically able to return to a tighter, firm appearance, whereas some women have excess stretched skin due to pregnancy and sometimes need a combination of liposuction and a tummy tuck to see the best results. Take a look at the video below to learn more about how fat removal in the midsection can be particularly beneficial for men.

For many men, abdominal liposuction can be a great cosmetic option, but every patient is unique.
