Questions to Ask During a Liposuction Consultation

A successful consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is a crucial and necessary first step towards achieving the aesthetic improvement that you desire from cosmetic surgery. During a consultation for liposuction, I discuss what this procedure is capable of to help patients establish realistic expectations for your surgery. We will discuss your surgery goals, medical history (including past surgeries, allergies, current medications, weight, diet habits), and more to confirm that liposuction is a safe and appropriate choice for your specific needs.

In order to get the most out of your liposuction consultation, it’s important to put in the time beforehand and come to your appointment prepared. Knowing what questions that you would like to ask in advance of your consultation can be an excellent way to ensure that you don’t leave any pressing curiosities or concerns on the table when your appointment has concluded. Although every patient is unique and no two consultations are the same, I would personally recommend asking the following questions during a liposuction consultation.

Are you board-certified as a plastic surgeon?
Do you have any other certifications or are you a member of any other plastic surgery societies or organizations?
How long have you been performing liposuction procedures?
What are the potential risks and complications of undergoing liposuction?
Will my liposuction be performed in your office or at a hospital?
Is the surgical venue accredited?
What areas can liposuction safely be applied to in my case?
How much downtime will I need for recovery after liposuction?
Do you have before-and-after liposuction photos from past procedures you have performed?
What can I expect from the final results of my liposuction?
How long will the results of my procedure last?
How much scarring should I expect after my surgery?
What kind of anesthesia will be used during my liposuction? And will anesthesia be supervised by an anesthesiologist?

When performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon, liposuction is a relatively simple procedure, but it’s still surgery. Therefore, it is important to take the necessary time to mentally and physically prepare for your procedure.
