Why is Plastic Surgery on the Rise for Men?

Plastic Surgery is on the rise for both women and men alike in the US. In fact, according to recent plastic surgery statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), we know that the number of cosmetic procedures performed on men continues to increase in popularity with every passing year. After all, there is nothing wrong with wanting to look your best and feel confident in your appearance. So, we know that cosmetic surgery is more popular than ever among male patients. But why is this?

Perhaps the increase in demand among male patients can be attributed to recently developed surgical techniques. Even though many men opt for traditional procedures like facelifts, there are now several cosmetic procedures tailored specifically to men like male breast reduction, as well as special techniques for male eyelid surgery. Additionally, some board-certified plastic surgeons are able to provide patients with more natural, subtle aesthetic results that many male patients seem to prefer. Cosmetic Procedures Were on the Rise in 2017

As a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I am always interested in keeping up with current trends within the world of cosmetic surgery. And there is perhaps no better resource for this than the annual plastic surgery statistics collected by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). As always, this year’s recently-released report features a number of interesting facts and figures. For starters, the number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the US last year increased by 11% compared to 2016. There are several developing trends in cosmetic surgery that I think male and female patients would find very interesting.

Cosmetic Procedures Were on the Rise in 2017

I highly recommend reading the whole report, but for anyone considering cosmetic surgery, here is a quick overview of their statistics:

  • Breast augmentation (333,392 procedures) surpassed liposuction (304,850 procedures) is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in the US.
  • Of the over 1.5 million cosmetic surgery procedures performed, 612,715 were cosmetic breast surgeries. This includes breast augmentation, breast lifts, breast revision, breast reduction, breast implant removal, and male breast reduction surgery for gynecomastia.
  • Eyelid surgery saw the biggest increase (26.3%) in procedures performed from 2016 to 2017.
  • Conversely, chin surgery saw the biggest decrease in popularity, dropping 9.7% last year.
  • The most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for male patients were liposuction, eyelid surgery, male breast reduction, tummy tucks, and facelifts.
  • Out of every region in the country, the South Atlantic, which includes Georgia, accounted for the most cosmetic procedures performed (25.9% of all cosmetic procedures).

Breast Lifts Increase 70% in Popularity Since 2000

Formally known as mastopexy, breast lift surgery is a commonly performed procedure that addresses sagging breasts, restoring them to a perkier, youthful position. During the rejuvenating procedure, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott removes excess skin and, rather than changing the size like in breast augmentation, tightens and reshapes the remaining breast tissue.

Recent plastic surgery statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reveal that breast lift surgeries are increasing at twice the rate of breast augmentation. In fact, breast lifts have grown 70% since 2000, beating out implant-based procedures two-to-one. With over 290,000 surgeries performed in 2013, breast augmentation is still more commonly performed among women, but growth is significant with breast lifts. According to the latest statistics from ASPS, fewer than 53,000 breast lifts were performed in 2000. Last year, over 90,000 breast lift procedures were performed by ASPS member surgeons, the highest number in history.

Breast lifts become desirable for a variety of reasons, including childbirth, breastfeeding, weight gain/loss, and aging. Often, even after women lose a significant amount of weight, they are left with excess skin and sagging breasts. Women who have a substantial amount of breast tissue but may not desire implants are usually ideal candidates for breast lifts. It is also essential that candidates have realistic expectations for the surgery: breasts will look more proportionate, shaped, and lifted, but will not increase in size unless the procedure is combined with a breast augmentation.
