The Incision Decision: What Are My Options for Breast Augmentation?

Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Franklyn Elliott has been performing surgery for over 25 years, specializing in both cosmetic and reconstructive breast procedures.  When you visit Dr. Elliott with interest in a cosmetic procedure, you will receive a comprehensive consultation to discuss the various options for breast enhancement. While aesthetic goals and implant selections will all be covered, an important aspect of discussion during consultations is the types of incisions available.

Understanding the numerous incision choices is essential for our patients. Ultimately, the choice is partially determined by both your preference and the type of breast implant desired.

Dr. Elliott performs breast augmentation surgery through an incision underneath the breast or around the areola. The most common breast incision is made underneath the breast, known as the inframammary incision. Dr. Elliott will then insert an implant just above the natural crease beneath the breast. Both silicone and saline implants can be placed through this incision, and scarring is minimal since it’s hidden underneath the breast. All silicone gel implants are placed through this incision.

An additional method is the periareolar technique, in which Dr. Elliott will make a small incision around the edge of the areola. If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of you nipples, you may also choose to have nipple reconstruction. This method is often suggested for women who would like to coalesce breast augmentation and breast lift procedures as both use this type of incision. It is most frequently used for saline implant insertion since the saline implant is inserted unfilled thus necessitating a smaller incision.

All of these methods are very personal and based on the patient’s desires. During consultation, Dr. Elliott will thoroughly discuss your individual choices.
